Should Christians Do Politics?

Writer: SteveSteve

I stole this title from a recent Godarchy podcast, where Michael Maharrey talks to Mark West about this topic. Please give this a listen, it's a really great discussion. They talk through a topic I've long been thinking about and have yet to reach a solid conclusion.

Yes, I consider myself an anarchist. Well...more specifically: I'm an anarchist politically speaking. Of course, Christ is my King. (So, you can call that whatever you'd like!)

Does this mean I should not participate in politics? Should I abstain from voting? What if the person I'm voting for is also an anarchist and wants to abolish the state? (And therefore end the atrocities our government is committing?)

These are great questions. I told myself that I was never going to vote again. Everyone knows that politicians are as corrupt as can be, and that the entire political process is rigged and useless. So, why participate?

Then I heard that Dave Smith might make a run for office on the Libertarian ticket. Politically speaking, I agree with him on nearly everything. And he's making a push to get people involved in their local parties. I found this tempting, but that kind of activism just isn't in my blood. I hate politics, and always have. I might financially support him, but I'm not to the point where it's worth my time.

The benefits of having a well-spoken advocate for freedom can go a long way by energizing those who are disenfranchised with the corrupt 2-party system. We all see where this country is heading, and there could be huge potential there to turn this place around.

I've also longed wondered why Christians aren't attracted to a Christ-centered world view. Too many of us are enthralled with the political process. I've been thinking about how to "convert" Christians to this (political) minarchist/anarchist framework.

As tempting as this is, that's not my mission on this planet. Sure, I feel like my welfare (and my family's welfare) would be much improved by having more liberty. But, has Christ called me to be an advocate of political freedom? No, I'm to be an advocate of spiritual freedom. Nothing wrong with doing both, but my priorities need to be straight.

This is all easier said than done, but something I'm working on. It's much easier for me to talk about how corrupt our government is, if I'm being honest. Do you all have thoughts on this? Should we use the political system to advocate for freedom? Or is participating hindering our ability to advance the Kingdom of God?

In any case, give that Godarchy podcast a listen. In fact, I'd encourage you to donate to his Patreon if you enjoyed it. He gives 40% of his donations to various causes, and I'm sure even $5/month is appreciated.

One final note, I have written anything for a while. I've been busy trying to learn how to make/edit videos. I hope to be able to create some video content in the near future. I may expound upon this topic too. I might be dreaming here, because that takes even more time. But, we'll see where this takes me. Thanks all, and take care!
