Anarchism means that we don’t believe in “the State”. Christian Anarchism holds that the Kingdom of God and the Good News declared by Jesus Christ is at its very core an anarchist tradition. Jesus is an anarchist, and in fact His struggle, and the struggle of those who have carried on the fight in His name, has been all about disengaging ourselves from the shackles of State-mindedness.
Life is always spontaneous, and free. Creativity can never be legislated; it must be inspired. This is the lesson that only Jesus could teach. Only He was perfect enough to live that message out entirely, and carry out God’s plan to its necessary finish. The message that Jesus gave us through His ministry, including His death and resurrection, was that Life is more than the physical. Jesus said to his opponents: “Tear down this temple, and I will raise it up again in three days”. He’s saying here that He’s more than His body.
So how can a set of rules made to govern material things ever be expected to govern One who is Spirit? Answer: It can’t! Of course, we do live in a material world, and our actions will respect material laws. The trick is to understand that we are not our bodies, and our Economy does not consist of material actions. For a Christian, it is Christ who lives when we live, so we don’t have to worry about the math. The math of right and wrong; laws and legislations, will work itself out. We just do our thing.
It is vital that we appreciate the importance of Anarchism as a defining principle of the true Way. Many preachers are afraid to speak the full truth on this matter openly, and this is a terrible mistake. We must never cover up a lie. Our only recourse is to decisively and unapologetically refute false teaching. Uncertainty, weakness or conflicting emotions regarding this matter are not our Way.
